The town of Sibiu has got a long history, of about 1000 years. It was first mentioned in documents in 1191.

Sibiu has been described and appreciated by the European travelers centuries ago, as a very interesting town. It is situated in the middle of the Romania and it is also called Hermannstadt , by the German. The town’s great attractions consist of the mediaeval aspect of the streets, the multiculturalism of its inhabitants, its economical development and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. What made the old travelers wonder must make the today’s European tourist be attracted by. Sibiu – Hermannstadt is waiting for many guests in the years to come. We, the people living in Sibiu, are sure that our guests will be deeply impressed.

1292 – the 1st hospital in Romania is first mentioned
1380 – the 1st school in Romania is firs mentioned
1494 – the 1st drugstore Romanian is opened
1524 – The Haller House has been inhabited for 345 year by the same family
1534 – the 1st Paper Mill in Romania
1544 – the 1st book in Romania is printed
1551 – Conrad Haas invents the first rocket in the world
1671 – the methane gas was discovered around Sibiu
1782 – The chemist Franz Joseph Muller discovers the tellurium
1795 – the oldest lightning – rod in the S-E Europe is set in Sibiu
1797 – Samuel von Hahnemann sets up the first homeopathic laboratory in the World
1817 – the Bruckenthal Museum, the 1st museum in Romania is opened in Sibiu.
1852 – “The Romanian Telegraph “ – the oldest newspaper in the South Europe appears in Sibiu
1859 – The Liars’Bridge is the 1st metallic bridge in Romania
1875 – the 1st factory of machines in Transylvania
1895 – The Natural History Museum is opened. It contains the oldest herbarium in Romania
1928 – the first Zoo Garden in Romania is opened in Sibiu
1904 – Sibiu is the 2nd town in Europe where the electric tram is introduced
1989 – Sibiu is the 2nd town that rose against Communism
